Two fighters with local roots were victorious at the Fight To Win 31 professional grappling Super Fight. The bouts were held at the 2300 Arena in South Philly on Friday. Bassil Badre Hafez, who trains at Balance Studios on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, submitted Taylor Bright of Marcelo Garcia BJJ.
Larry Fryers did not take a traditional route to a professional boxing career. Born in Queens, New York, to Irish parents, he moved back with his family to Clones, County Mongahan in the border region when he was a small child. He took up boxing at an early age. Coached by his father, Fryers had a promising amateur career, boxing on the Irish National team.

Taylor Dominates Volante, Irish Take 2 of 3 at Liacouras Center. Superstar Irish lightweight boxer Katie Taylor defeated Rose Volane of Brazil with a 9th round TKO to start Saint Patrick’s weekend in Philadelphia. Taylor now leaves Philly with the WBO belt at 135 pounds. Taylor easily led the scorecards in all stats prior to the knockout.

Delco middleweight fights Saturday, July 31, at the Showboat Hotel and Casino. Local boxer Brendan O’Callaghan is set to make his pro boxing debut on the famed boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. O’Callaghan, of Briarcliff, did not take the normal route to the pro ranks. Described by many as a tough kid, he was an All-Catholic Defensive End at Cardinal O’Hara High School and served four years in the U.S.
SOUTH PHILLY'S own two-time Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon is welcomed by fellow South Philadelphian and vice-president of the Veteran Boxers Association Fred Druding Jr. to the 12th Annual Briscoe Awards held at Xfinity Live. Witherspoon spends most of his time today in England working with young boxers, but never forgets his South Philly roots.

Friday at the 2300 Arena in South Philly, prospect Thomas “TJ” Velasquez (9-0 with 5 knockouts) of Lehigh Avenue and the Danny Garcia Gym in Kensington defeated Brandon Sanudo (5-4 2KO) of Baja California, Mexico by Unanimous Decision in a lightweight bout. Sanudo looked every bit an Olympian. Unfortunately he looked like a marathon runner and not an elite international boxer.

Many are saying that Adorno could be “The Next Great Puerto Rican Boxer,” and he fights next at the Roberto Clemente Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Friday, February 3 on the undercard of the Felix Verdejo-Oliver Flores WBO Latino Lightweight title bout.
It’s May, which means it’s Hall of Fame induction time in the boxing community. Last week, Spirit News reported on Wade Hinnant, George Hill and Frank Kubach’s induction into the 2017 class of the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame. This week, promoter J. Russell Peltz was inducted into the inaugural class of the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame at the Claridge Hotel in the beachside resort.
North Philly junior lightweight contender Tevin Farmer (25-4-1 with 5 knockouts) and Australian Billy “The Kid” Dib (42-4 24KO) have been ordered to meet in a title elimination bout to decide the next mandatory challenger for IBF world title holder Gervonta “Tank” Davis (18-0 17KO) of Baltimore. Both Farmer and Davis are both East Coast crowd pleasers with a lot of street cred and they have a history of bad blood.
